Trip Note:

During the peak trekking seasons of September to November and March to May, flights between Kathmandu and Lukla will be operated from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. This change is due to high air traffic congestion at Kathmandu’s main airport during these busy months. Manthali Airport, located approximately 132 kilometers (82 miles) from Kathmandu, serves as an alternative to alleviate the congestion. The drive from Kathmandu to Manthali typically takes about 4 to 5 hours, and transportation arrangements will be made to ensure trekkers reach Manthali Airport in time for their flights. This adjustment helps ensure smoother travel logistics and a more efficient trekking experience.

Trip Information of Everest Base Camp Trek

Spanning approximately 130 kilometers round-trip, this trek offers unparalleled views of towering Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest itself. Starting from Lukla, a scenic flight from Kathmandu introduces trekkers to the rugged terrain and traditional Sherpa villages along the route.

The trek progresses through diverse landscapes, from lush pine forests to alpine meadows and barren moraines, culminating at Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 feet). Along the way, trekkers pass through famous landmarks such as Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa cultural center, and Tengboche Monastery, a spiritual hub with panoramic mountain vistas.

The journey not only offers a physical challenge but also a cultural immersion, with opportunities to interact with Sherpa communities and learn about their unique way of life. Trekkers experience the hospitality of teahouse lodgings and savor local cuisine, ensuring an unforgettable Himalayan adventure. Whether seasoned mountaineers or first-time trekkers, the Everest Base Camp trek remains a bucket-list experience, promising awe-inspiring views and a deep connection with the world’s highest peaks.

  1. Best Time to Travel to Everest Base Camp:

Do you know the best times to trek to Everest Base Camp? Certainly, the pre-monsoon (spring) season is from March to May.  The post-monsoon (autumn) season is from September to November is considered the best season. These periods offer the most stable weather and clear views.

Pre- Monsoon Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is 2nd most popular time for trekking to Everest Base Camp (EBC). The weather is relatively stable, with clear skies and mild temperatures during the day. This season offers excellent visibility of the mountains, making it perfect for photography and sightseeing.

In the spring season, blooming rhododendron forests, add vibrant colors to the trail. Travelers will enjoy spotting various species of birds that inhabit the region.

The EBC trek is a sought-after route for adventurers. In the peak trekking seasons, the trails and teahouses can be crowded, especially around popular stops like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Digboche, Lobuche, etc. You should let your corresponding agent, Go Trekking Nepal, for the booking.

Autumn Season (September to November)

The post-monsoon autumn season is considered the best time for trekking due to its stable and dry weather. The skies are usually clear, and haze-free, offering spectacular views of Everest and the surrounding peaks.

Similar to the spring season, daytime temperatures can be expected ranging from 10°C to 15°C at lower elevations. Nights can be cold, with temperatures dropping to -10°C to -5°Cat higher altitudes.

The autumn is festive season in Nepal.  The main festivals Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath, provide a unique opportunity to experience local culture and traditions.

Like spring, autumn is a peak trekking season, so expect busy trails and packed teahouses.

Other Considerations

Winter Season (December to February)

Trekking in winter is possible but more challenging due to cold temperatures and heavy snowfall. The trails are less crowded, offering a more solitary experience.

Even daytime temperatures go negative, ranging from -10°C to 5°C at lower altitudes, and plummeting to -20°C to -10°C at higher elevations.

The clear skies offer stunning mountain views, and the less crowded trails provide a peaceful trekking experience.

The extreme cold and potential for snow-covered paths make this season suitable for experienced trekkers only.

Monsoon Season (June to August)

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, making the trails slippery and challenging. The clouds often obscure mountain views, and there is a higher risk of landslides, falling rocks and boulders on the trail, and flight cancellations.

Warmer temperatures, range from 15°C to 25°C at lower elevations, but are still cold at higher altitudes.

The trails are much quieter, and the lush green landscapes are beautiful and less crowded.

Frequent rain, leeches, poor or almost zero visibility, and flight cancellations from/to Lukla are significant drawbacks.

Tips for Choosing the Best Time

  1. We suggest trekkers to review the weather forecast before planning your trek, no matter the season. The Weather and Meteorology Department of Nepal provides free information to inquirers.
  2. In the peak seasons, teahouses, flights, and tourists carrying vehicles get fully booked, so it’s advisable to make reservations well ahead of time.
  3. Beginners might find the stable and clear weather of spring and autumn more suitable, while experienced trekkers might enjoy the solitude and challenges of winter or monsoon trekking.

By thoughtfully choosing the timing of your Everest Base Camp trek, you can enhance your overall experience, fully appreciating the stunning landscapes and unique cultural encounters that await you.

  1. Elevation and Trekking Distance:

The Everest Base Camp trek begins in Lukla at an elevation of 2,860 meters and climbs to Everest Base Camp, situated at 5,364 meters. The entire trek covers a distance of roughly 130 kilometers round trip.

  1. Maximum/Minimum Walk per Day:

The maximum walking day can be expected around 8-9 hours on the longer days, such as the trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep and then to Everest Base Camp.

The minimum walk will be about 3-4 hours on shorter acclimatization days or easy segments in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.

  1. Can a Beginner Trek to Everest Base Camp?

Yes, a beginner can trek to Everest Base Camp with proper preparation and training. Physical fitness, mental determination, and some prior hiking experiences are beneficial.

  1. Your Health:

Acclimatization is most important to prevent altitude sickness. It’s essential to stay hydrated, eat well, and take rest days to adjust to the altitude. Trekkers should consult with a doctor before the trek, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.

  1. Preparation and Training:

Preparation should include cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hiking with a backpack. Start training at least 2-3 months before the trek to build stamina and endurance.

  1. Alternate Routes:

Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass:   Offers stunning views and a challenging pass.

Jiri to Everest Base Camp:   The classic route taken by early Everest expeditions, starting from Jiri.

Phaplu to Everest Base Camp: Phaplu is located in the lower Solu region which is accessed by plane—a 20-minute flight from Kathmandu, or ground transport—an 8-hour drive.

  1. Food and Drink:

Teahouses along the trail offer a variety of meals, including traditional Nepali dishes, pasta, rice, and vegetables. Drinking plenty of water is crucial; bottled water, boiled water, and water purification tablets are options.

  1. Gadgets Charging and Internet:

Charging is available in teahouses, usually for a fee. Internet access is available in some locations, but it can be slow and expensive. Consider carrying a power bank.

  1. Permits for Everest Base Camp Trekking:

Two permits are required: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. Both can be obtained in Kathmandu or on the trail.

  1. A Typical Day During the Trek:

–   Morning:   Wake up, breakfast, and start trekking.

–   Midday:   Lunch break at a teahouse.

–   Afternoon:   Continue trekking to the next destination.

–   Evening:   Dinner, rest, and acclimatization.

  1. Transportation:

Most trekkers fly from Kathmandu to Lukla to start the trek. Alternatively, a longer route starts with a bus or jeep ride to Jiri or Phaplu.

  1. Your Extra Expenses:

Expenses include meals, drinks, charging gadgets, hot showers, Wi-Fi, tips for guides and porters, and souvenirs.

  1. Tipping Ideas for Guides and Porters:

Tipping is customary and appreciated. Typically, $5-10 per day for guides and $3-5 per day for porters, but it varies based on the service quality and group size.

  1. What to Expect on Our Everest Base Camp Trek Package?

Expect comprehensive support including experienced guides, accommodation, meals, permits, and necessary trekking gear. The package typically covers most expenses except for personal items and optional services.

  1. Private Trip vs. Group Joining:

Private Trip:   More flexibility in itinerary and pace, tailored services, and privacy.

Group Joining:   More cost-effective, social experience, and shared resources. However, you have to follow other trekkers’ speed and break.

  1. Insurance:

Trekking insurance is essential and should cover high-altitude trekking, emergency evacuation, and medical expenses.

  1. Everest Base Camp Trek, Booking Open for 2024 and 2025:

Bookings are open for upcoming seasons. Early booking ensures availability and allows for better preparation and planning.

  1. Trip Extension:

Optional trip extensions include visits to Gokyo Lakes, Island Peak climbing, or exploring cultural sites in Kathmandu.
