Upper Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most exotic and unique trekking experiences, often referred to as a “forbidden kingdom.” Located in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, Upper Mustang lies in the north-central region of Nepal, near the border with Tibet. This region was restricted to outsiders until 1992, preserving its distinct Tibetan-influenced culture and landscape. Trekking through Upper Mustang allows adventurers to explore an ancient and remote world, characterized by arid landscapes, colorful rock formations, medieval villages, and Buddhist monasteries.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be greeted and transferred to a hotel. Having checked in, and getting refreshed, you will visit to Go Trekking Nepal office for a short briefing about the trek and official work. In the evening, you will join in a welcome dinner with traditional Nepalese cuisine.

Today, you will explore some of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and the historic Durbar Square. In the afternoon, there will be a trek briefing session, and you will have time to prepare and purchase any last-minute gear.

Early in the morning, likely 6:30 am, we will either go to the Tourist Bus Stand to catch a tourist bus to Pokhara or, as per your requirement, take a short flight (25 minutes) to Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside city. Upon arrival, you can explore the city or relax by Phewa Lake, soaking in the stunning mountain views, and rowing in the Phewa Lake.

We take a scenic morning flight to Jomsom, the administrative headquarter of Mustang District. The flight offers incredible views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Upon landing, we start our trek to Kagbeni, a traditional village located at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki Rivers. Kagbeni serves as the gateway to Upper Mustang.

We officially enter into the restricted area of Upper Mustang, heading towards Chele. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River, passing through arid landscapes, narrow gorges, and small settlements like Tangbe and Chhusang. Chele is a small village located on a ridge, offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills.

Today’s trail takes us through rugged terrain, crossing several passes, including Taklam La (3,624 meters) and Dajori La (3,735 meters). The landscape changes dramatically, with deep canyons, wind-eroded cliffs, and caves dotting the hillsides. We pass through the villages of Samar and Bhena before reaching Syanbochen.

We continue to ascend, crossing the Yamda La Pass (3,850 meters) and passing by several chortens (Buddhist shrines) and tea houses. The trail offers excellent views of the Nilgiri and Annapurna ranges. We descend to the village of Ghami, one of the largest villages in the Lo region, surrounded by cultivated fields.

The trail to Tsarang takes us through the longest mani wall (stone wall with Tibetan prayers) in Mustang, stretching for over 1,000 meters. After crossing the Tsarang La Pass (3,870 meters), we descend to the village of Tsarang, where we can visit an ancient monastery and a palace.

We make our way to the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. The trail offers panoramic views of the Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Tilicho peaks. Lo Manthang is a fascinating city with a rich cultural heritage, featuring whitewashed houses, monasteries, and a palace. The town is home to approximately 150 households and several important monasteries.

Today is dedicated to exploring the ancient city of Lo Manthang and its surrounding areas. We can visit the royal palace, ancient monasteries such as Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Lhakhang, and the Namgyal Monastery located on a hilltop. We can also take a short trip to the nearby villages of Chhoser and Nyphu to visit ancient caves carved into the hills.

Leaving Lo Manthang, we take a different route back, trekking through the village of Ghar Gompa. This monastery is believed to be older than Lo Manthang and houses beautiful religious art. After visiting the monastery, we continue our trek to Dhakmar, known for its red cliffs.

We retrace our steps back to Ghiling, passing through the arid and dusty Mustang landscape. The trek offers incredible views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri ranges.

Today’s trek takes us further downhill as we make our way back to Chhusang. The trail passes through familiar villages and rugged landscapes, offering ample opportunities to soak in the beauty of Mustang.

We complete the final leg of our trek today, walking back to Jomsom. The trail is mostly flat, following the Kali Gandaki River. Upon reaching Jomsom, you can relax and enjoy a celebratory dinner.

We take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, where you can enjoy the rest of the day exploring the city or relaxing by Phewa Lake.

We either drive or fly back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. You can spend the evening shopping for souvenirs or exploring more of the Kathmandu Valley.

While the options are limited, the food is freshly prepared and caters to vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences.
The best seasons for the Upper Mustang trek are from March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn) . During these months, the weather is stable, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The monsoon months (June to August) are also suitable as Upper Mustang lies in a rain-shadow area, making it one of the few treks accessible during this period.
Yes, Upper Mustang is a culturally sensitive region with deep Buddhist traditions. Trekkers should respect local customs, such as walking clockwise around chortens (stupas) and not touching sacred objects without permission. Additionally, the fragile environment calls for responsible trekking, such as avoiding plastic waste and using designated trails to prevent erosion.
To trek in Upper Mustang, you need a Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 for the first 10 days) and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) . The restricted permit is issued only through a registered trekking agency and requires a minimum of two trekkers accompanied by a licensed guide. Extensions beyond 10 days incur additional costs of USD 50 per day.
